It gets me thinking ,what is it that makes it so different. It seems to be a culmination of numerous things like the warmth of the people around, their love for food, culture , debates, politics etc. and the old world feel.
Unlike the other metros Ive stayed and been to , Kolkata still manages to retain its identity not completely losing it to a world of malls and night life. Let me just share some of my observations which according to me make the city all the more endearing:
- Its rare to find people in Kolkata who arent helpful. At times it might even get you suspicious.
- Every second vehicle (4-wheeler) will have atleast one scratch.
- You don't necessary need to know people here to socialise you can start a conversation anywhere , you will have company!!
- 90% of the ladies here.. wear long earrings
- You are sure to find the following in almost everybody's handbags : a hand towel / handkerchief, a bottle of water and an umbrella.
- Everybody sleeps in the afternoon ..
- Two sounds which you will never cease to hear : honks of vehicles and the tring tring of rickshaws
These are just some of the many Kolkatian characteristics Ive penned down.. Im sure there is lots more that make this city what it is .... and until Im back here the next time I take with me the warmth and the fond memories of my stay here.
